The De Anza Dons defeated the Hartnell Panthers 62-55 in a conference game on Jan. 29.
The women's basketball team had a slow start during the first quarter, accumulating seven fouls and a score of 28-24. But with the encouragement of the fans shouting "Defense!" the Dons capitalized by heating up their defense and getting focused during the second half.
"It felt like a nice start to begin round two of the season. We played as a team, not as individuals, and that's how we won the game," said point guard Kathleen De La Cruz.
Teamwork helped the Dons during the second half. With the game tied 33-33 with just over 15 minutes on the clock, the determination exhibited by the Dons threw Hartnell off track. The Panthers began to lose their focus making room for the Dons to push forward offensively.
To compensate for the lack of energy during the first half, the Dons applied pressure as guard Brittney Moseley came on to the court and took possession the ball from the Panthers and scored a three pointer putting the Dons further in the lead.
"I feel confident that we can beat any team because we pull together on the court," Moseley said. "Everybody plays a different role and they're doing it well on and off the bench."
The Dons' next home game will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 10 against Mission College at 5:30 p.m.
